Apathy: causes and methods of combating
Many people have experienced a state of apathy at least once in their lives. At this time, a person loses interest in everything, becomes indifferent and passive. Many people confuse apathy with depression, but these are different concepts. With apathy, indifference becomes too strong, a person ceases to see the meaning of life. To prevent this condition from protracting and causing more severe consequences, it must be dealt with.
Causes of apathy
There are various factors that can provoke such a psycho-emotional state. It is based on the inability to cope with the difficulties that arise on a person’s path. This causes anxiety, excitement, and lack of self-confidence. The consequence of this is apathy.
Psychologists identify the following reasons for this condition:
- Sudden changes in lifestyle. Everyone perceives change differently: for some it is normal, for others it can cause serious stress. Such changes could be the loss of a job, the death of a loved one, etc.
- State of dependence. People who are addicted to something are often susceptible to apathy: alcohol, drugs. They experience a change in mood; after a period of euphoria, indifference may set in.
- Striving for ideal. If a person is subject to increased demands from others and he tries to meet them, sooner or later he will experience burnout syndrome.
- Hormonal background. It affects mood swings. Therefore, apathy is familiar to people taking hormonal drugs, as well as women during premenstrual syndrome.
- Prolonged emotional or physical stress. If a person engages in some activity for a long time and gets tired, he stops experiencing pleasure in it. In addition, indifference to everything may arise. Apathy can occur in representatives of a particular profession whose work involves helping people.

- Various diseases. Apathy can be one of the symptoms of some diseases ( schizophrenia, various brain lesions, diseases of the endocrine system).
In addition, sometimes apathy develops while taking sleeping pills and contraceptives, as well as antibiotics.
Laziness and apathy - what to do
Psychologists recommend three main ways to combat apathy: get a good rest, get enough sleep, and treat yourself to a delicious natural antidepressant. It could be, for example, milk with honey or green tea with chocolate.
In addition, therapeutic therapy should include walks in the fresh air, a balanced diet, and moderate physical activity. It is also useful to choose a good vitamin complex.
If these measures do not help and the apathy continues for more than a month, you should consult a specialist. This is especially important in the presence of symptoms such as confusion, tinnitus, and difficulty speaking.
How to deal with apathy
Depending on the reasons that caused apathy and the individual characteristics of a person, they use different ways to combat it. Of course, everything here is individual: active communication with friends helps some people, while others are even more irritated by it. However, there are several universal methods that help almost everyone:
- Show yourself some pity. Don’t be ashamed of this feeling: it’s not for nothing that they say that we knock out wedges with wedges. If some kind of trouble occurs, first of all, you need to cry properly. After this, you can start a new life with peace of mind.
- Pamper yourself. When you feel sorry for yourself, you also need to pamper yourself. It doesn’t matter what it is: a chocolate bar or a piece of jewelry, the main thing is that you feel happy again.

- Understand the reasons for what is happening. Remember at what point apathy arose and whether the circumstances that caused it were really so difficult.
- Start making plans. To avoid confusion that causes apathy, you need to set a goal for yourself, then there will simply be no time left for boredom.
- Change your lifestyle. Since bad habits are one of the causes of apathy, it is better to give them up. Take up your favorite sport, reconsider your views on nutrition.
- Try to get rid of negative emotions and evoke positive ones. Protect yourself from everything that can upset you: pessimistic friends, bad news. Let optimism and new bright sensations become your friends.
A condition such as apathy should never be left to chance. Timely identification of the causes and measures taken will help cope with the situation and prevent serious consequences from occurring.
