Home Family and home Interior How to remove dirt and odors from your sofa

Absolutely all family members, and especially men and children, do not deny themselves the pleasure of having a snack while sitting on the couch in front of the TV. After such "labor feats" the sofa quickly becomes dirty and absorbs unpleasant, but rather persistent odors. Professional dry-cleaning of upholstered furniture is not a cheap pleasure - in those cases when it is already impossible to do without it, the owners of the sofa have to fork out for a tidy sum. But still, in most cases, even the most difficult stains and odors from upholstered furniture can be removed on your own and at low financial costs.

Of course, ideally, you should constantly monitor that stains do not appear on the sofa, which quickly penetrate the structure of the upholstery fabric. To do this, it is always necessary to have napkins on hand that absorb grease and moisture. An ambulance can be provided to the sofa using available tools, for example:

  • Stains from beer or coffee are removed with a napkin dipped in soap and vinegar solution.
  • Spilled wine must be immediately sprinkled with salt and then wiped off with a damp cloth.
  • Fruit or juice stains are “soaked” with a mixture of ammonia and vinegar, and then rinsed well with clean water.
  • Chocolate, on the contrary, should not be washed off immediately - it is better to wait until the stain is dry, and then treat it with soapy water, preferably with a stiff brush.
  • Oil stains are covered with something that absorbs grease, for example, starch or soda. After part of the stain has been absorbed, the residue is washed off with soapy water.
  • Blood and urine stains must be removed immediately - blot with a napkin and rinse with cold water, in which you need to dissolve an aspirin tablet.
  • But traces of ink (a leaked pen) can be easily removed with an acetone-based nail polish remover.

In addition, any dirt and stains can be removed with chemicals such as VANISH, a well-advertised and truly effective product. With the help of the foam that forms during its dilution, even old traces can be eliminated. As a last resort, if it was not at hand, you can replace it with ordinary shampoo mixed with a few drops of ammonia.

An important reminder when cleaning stains from a sofa: before using this or that cleaning method, you must first try the product on a small area and see if the upholstery is shedding. Any stains are removed by wiping them from the edges to the center of the dirt so that the stain does not spread further, and the movements of the brush should be respectively in the direction of the threads and fibers of the fabric.

Streaks on the couch can appear from poorly brushed off dust or a rubbed liquid stain. You can also get rid of stains by following some tips:

  • Before removing stains, it is necessary to clean the sofa from dust - either in the old way - cover the furniture with a wet sheet and carefully, with a beater, “tap” the entire surface of the sofa, or with a vacuum cleaner.
  • Pour cold water into a container with a spray bottle and add ammonia (or table vinegar). After spraying the liquid all over the sofa, wipe all dirt and streaks with a soft sponge.
  • The cleaned sofa must be thoroughly dried immediately using a hairdryer or a fan, otherwise water stains will also remain.

You should always remember the so-called "golden rule" of cleaning sofas - you cannot remove only a stain, you need to clean the entire sofa at once - otherwise stains cannot be avoided, and the furniture will quickly lose all its appearance and attractiveness.

An unpleasant and persistent odor, "stuck" in the sofa, can be easily removed using chemical detergents with fragrances. But there are also some stains, the smell of which is quite persistent - beer, urine or champagne. Such odors can be removed with a vinegar solution, which must be rubbed well into the upholstery fabric. The smell of vinegar will disappear in a few days, and with it all the unpleasant "aromas".

In order for all of the above listed means of removing dirt from furniture to become really effective, the treatment should be repeated more than once. And in order to prevent the appearance of stains, streaks and odors on your favorite sofa, it is necessary to cover it with covers that protect the upholstery from any "troubles".
