Blanket pattern

Sewing a blanket is as easy as shelling pears, and you don't need a pattern as such. The only thing that needs to be taken into account is the size of the bed on which the blanket is sewn. Measure the surface of the bed and take enough extra on all sides so that the blanket hangs nicely in the future.

There are standard sizes of blankets, which are used by manufacturers of mass-produced items. For children, choose the following sizes:

  • 90*90 cm;
  • 110*140 cm;
  • 100*135 cm;
  • 60*120 cm.

To create a pattern, simply draw a square or rectangle of the selected size and cut out the future blanket using it. Now let's take a little closer look at the process of sewing a blanket.

Sewing a blanket step by step instructions

Let's start with choosing fabric, everything is simple. Since the blanket is often tucked into a duvet cover, you don’t have to sweat for a long time over the choice of fabric and design of the future blanket. The ideal choice would be cotton fabric, and the specific type depends on financial capabilities. A budget option is chintz or calico, but do not forget that the strength of such a blanket will not be the best. Almost timeless high quality blankets are made from linen. This is a wonderful strong material, but the price per meter is more expensive than the previous two. So, we’ve sorted out the material, now let’s talk about its quantity.

The standard width of the canvas is 150 cm. However, there are also specimens with a width of 220 cm.

For a fabric width of 150 cm you will need:

  • with a blanket size of 90*90 cm - 1.9 m;
  • with a blanket size of 110*140 cm - 2.3 m;
  • with a blanket size of 100*135 cm - 2.1 m;
  • with a blanket size of 60*120 cm - 1.3 m.

For a fabric width of 220 cm you will need:

  • with a blanket size of 90*90 cm - 1 m;
  • with a blanket size of 110*140 cm - 2.3 m;
  • with a blanket size of 100*135 cm - 1.4 m;
  • with a blanket size of 60*120 cm - 1.3 m.

The consumption is indicated taking into account seam allowances. In this case, it is better to do 2 cm on each side. If you want to play it safe, take the specified amount of material + 10%. This is necessary in case the fabric shrinks. In addition to fabric, you need padding polyester or holofiber as a filler. Its quantity is determined from the following factors:

  • material width;
  • material density;
  • desired thickness of the future blanket;
  • blanket sizes.

There should be no problems with calculating the amount of padding polyester, just proceed from your own preferences and calculations.

Next, let's look at the sewing process step by step:

  1. Decorate the material so that the blanket does not shrink after the first wash.
  2. Draw a rectangle or square on the fabric, taking into account seam allowances, and cut out 2 pieces.
  3. Cut the padding polyester to the appropriate size.
  4. Place the pieces of the blanket facing inward and sew around the perimeter, leaving the hole for threading the padding through unsewn.
  5. Turn the blanket inside out through the remaining hole and press the seams.
  6. Thread the padding polyester inside the blanket and distribute it evenly.
  7. To prevent the padding polyester from “moving” inside, the blanket needs to be quilted. To do this, you can choose simple patterns, diamonds, or redraw stencil images onto the fabric and quilt over them.
  8. As soon as the blanket is quilted, the hole through which the padding polyester was threaded is sewn up with a hidden hand stitch. That's it, the blanket is ready to use.

We have described the classic version of sewing a blanket. In fact, you can approach this process from a creative side and use various decorative elements: ribbons, braid, lace, etc. Everything is limited only by your imagination.
