Home Family and home Children How to potty train a child

A small child is constantly learning something. Literally from the first days of life. Explores the world through a series of trial and error. And he gets invaluable experience. But sooner or later there comes a time when an adult must teach the child skills required throughout life. Eat, dress or potty by yourself. It is about the issue of personal hygiene that will be discussed in this article.

What time to potty train

At whatever age the potty training begins, the main thing in this matter is patience. In no case do not scold the kid for "relapses".

So, about readiness. Someone starts dropping the child as soon as he has sat down. At the age of 6-8 months. And if this business is crowned with success, then we can only say about a correctly worked out reflex. Because the child himself at such an early age is not yet ready for this. More precisely, his nervous system.

Under the age of one year, the baby perceives the pot as a toy. Therefore, he simply does not understand how to use it for its intended purpose.

The first signs of consciousness and self-control in children appear at 18 months. Of course, this is general data. Each child is unique and will be ready for anything in due time. Those who claim that their 9-month-old baby goes to the potty on his own is just training his reflex. And sooner or later they will be defeated at the moment when the baby begins to realize the need.

The bladder sends a signal to the cerebral cortex. And as soon as the nerve endings of the cortex are sufficiently strong, the child will begin to write meaningfully. Teaching to empty the bladder on command breaks down human nature. Initially, there is a need, followed by an action.

You should not teach a child to write according to the characteristic sound of "writing-writing". This way you will have a child with Pavlov's dog syndrome. But this is not an independent conscious desire. Moreover, this approach can turn into incidents in an older age. Hearing these sounds on the street, the child's brain will send a signal to the urinary organs. Will the child have time to take off his pants or not?

How to wean a baby from diapers

A baby is ready to unlearn diapers if:

  • can independently remove and clothe panties or pants;
  • a mode of going to the toilet has developed, that is, the process occurs at regular intervals;
  • realizes the inconvenience of being in a wet diaper and can show it with crying or gestures;
  • the diaper stays dry from 2 hours to the whole night;
  • knows the names of body parts and garments.

The most effective is the "wet pants" method.

  1. Put clean, dry pants on your child. Make sure the elastic is not too tight.
  2. Explain what a pot is, what they do there and show with sounds how to ask.
  3. Wear a diaper only at night and for a walk.
  4. At first, the baby will still walk in his pants. It is necessary to give an opportunity to realize that it is not comfortable in wet linen, it is cold. But do not abuse it - no more than 10 minutes in wet panties and only if the house is warm.
  5. After 3-4 days, the child will begin to ask for the toilet on his own.
  6. You should not start weaning before 1.5 years, because the child is not yet aware of what he needs out of need.

The most important thing in any teaching is not to forget to praise. For any, even the smallest, achievement. A child who feels supported by an adult develops faster. It is important for children to know that they are appreciated and loved.

Please note that after potty training in the daytime mode, you will still have to use a diaper at night. After all, the moment of night monitoring in children occurs at 3-4 years old.

Choose a regular plastic pot. You should not buy models with sound or light effects - they will distract the child from the action. Plus, a pot in the form of a duck and a toy car will be perceived by a child as a toy for a longer time. It is advisable to buy a "throne" with a back, so it is more convenient. Divide the learning process into several steps.

  1. Acquaintance. The best way to potty training is through play. Put the toys on the pot, tell them that they are already big and go without a diaper. Explain how "ka-ka" and "pee-pee" occur in colors and sounds.
  2. Planting. If the child bends over and cries while sitting on the potty, leave this venture for a while. So the baby is not ready yet. The first planting should be done at the most appropriate time - after sleeping or eating, when the little man most likely wants to go to the toilet.
  3. Do not allow the child to spend too much time on the pot. This can adversely affect health - there is pressure on the pelvic floor and rectum, which is fraught with cracks and hemorrhoids.
  4. So, the baby is accustomed to the pot, he can sit on it calmly and does not cry. Move on to more frequent planting - every 2-3 hours. As if trying to catch the need. Of course, before sitting down, you need to ask the baby about his desire.
  5. Do not intimidate the child or threaten him with punishment. Only a positive attitude will bring fast and confident mastering of the pot. You should not chase speed and inflict psychological trauma on the child.

  • there are delays in psychoemotional development;
  • sitting on the potty toddler experiences stress, do not hold it down forcibly;
  • perhaps your kid wants to immediately start mastering the toilet, like adults, get a special pad;
