How to remove scratches on car glass
Since glass is a very fragile material, only superficial damage can be removed, deep scratches cannot be removed, only a complete replacement or contacting a specialist will help. However, by eliminating the superficial, you can thereby slightly smooth out the deep ones. When it comes to car glass, two methods can help - wet sanding and polishing. The first method can be applied only to those glasses that make it possible to remove a large layer without losing the quality of the material, most often these are headlights, but it is dangerous to correct the windshield in this way, at least without having special skills for this. Otherwise, it can lead to the formation of irregularities, which ultimately create a lens effect. As for the side windows, they are tempered, so any inaccurate movement can lead to the fact that it will simply crack.
But most motorists carry out polishing by their own efforts. This is the safest procedure, due to the removal of the thinnest layer, which does not exceed a few tenths of a micron, and the level of transparency after such an operation is restored to 90% of the baseline. For the polishing procedure, you can use pastes: GOI, Crocus or Polarite.
To remove scratches with your own efforts, you need to carry out preparatory procedures, which include the following steps:
- Wash the car thoroughly and let it dry properly. To reduce the time, you can limit yourself to high-quality glass wiping using special cleaning agents.
- Mark the places of damage with a marker.
- To prevent flying particles from damaging the body at the time of polishing, it is recommended to cover potentially vulnerable areas with a film.
Then you can proceed directly to the polishing procedure. Special polishing machines can act as a tool, but only professionals often have such a unit. Therefore, mere mortals often get by with a drill, which has a tissue attachment. Only in this case, it should be borne in mind that when working with such a unit, the glass will be very hot and this must be constantly monitored, taking breaks from work. Otherwise, the glass will crack completely. Drive the typewriter constantly, it should not be allowed to be in one place.
The order of work is as follows:
- Apply polishing paste to the affected areas of the glass.
- Start polishing. Do not apply pressure and try not to touch areas that do not need correction.
- As soon as the polishing process comes to an end - remove the remaining paste, rinse the glass and wipe the surface dry.
Remember, this way you can only get rid of a surface defect. Deep scratches can also be repaired without having to completely replace the glass, but only professionals can do this. Therefore, in serious cases, you will have to go for help.
How to remove scratches on watch glass
Since the watch is constantly worn on the wrist, the likelihood of damage to the glass on the dial is very high. As in the case of car glass, it is possible to engage in amateur performances here only with shallow damage. However, we will warn you in advance that if the watch is expensive and made of precious material, then it is better not to risk it and turn to the watchmaker's workshop.
One of the options for removing a scratch on a watch glass is toothpaste. There should not be any granules in it, just like the ingredients for whitening.
A little of this paste needs to be applied to a cotton pad and with very light movements, almost without pressure, moving clockwise, you need to start polishing. It will take half a minute to get rid of small scratches and even dirt. Now take a clean cotton pad, wet it and squeeze as hard as possible, then remove the composition from the watch. Be careful not to let fluid run underneath the housing. If the defect cannot be eliminated the first time, try again.
To polish watches, you can use all the same GOI paste, which is often sold in hardware stores. The principle of working with it is similar to the method of polishing with toothpaste. Please note that the paste has a number marking, the higher the latter, the rougher the paste. Therefore, if the damage is weak, take the softest paste and vice versa. Finish polishing by wiping the glass with mineral oil. If done correctly, the glass will eventually shine.
