Why does toxicosis occur?
To date, the phenomenon of toxicosis in pregnant women has not been fully studied. But scientists still identified the probable reasons for its development:
- Hormonal changes in the body. Immediately after the implantation of the fertilized egg inside the uterus, the body begins to produce hormones differently. This affects a woman’s well-being – her sensitivity to smells increases, her taste preferences change, and she experiences bouts of nausea.
- During the first trimester, the placenta forms in the uterus of the expectant mother, which can also be a possible cause of toxicosis. Before it ends, toxic substances penetrate the mother’s body, which is why protective functions in the form of vomiting are activated. This is how the body tries to get rid of possible poisoning.
- Another likely cause of toxicosis is the fetal defense mechanism. It has been noticed that at the beginning of pregnancy a woman begins to experience an aversion to substances that are potentially dangerous to the health of the baby. These include alcohol, tobacco smoke, caffeinated drinks, meat and fish, as well as other products that may contain microflora pathogenic for the fetus.
- Toxicosis can be triggered by chronic ailments. The weak immunity of the expectant mother becomes good soil for the development of toxicosis. Therefore, even before pregnancy, it is important to get your health in order.
- Poor psychological state, exposure to stress, irritability and emotional negative shocks often undermine the physical health of a pregnant woman and cause toxicosis.
- Great age of pregnant woman. It has been noticed that with age it becomes more and more difficult for a woman to endure pregnancy. This also applies to exposure to toxicosis.
- Heredity plays a serious role in this matter. If older relatives suffered from toxicosis during pregnancy, then it is more likely to accompany your pregnancy.
- In multiple pregnancies, toxicosis is more common.
When toxicosis appears
It is impossible to predict the date of onset of toxicosis down to the day. It all depends on the individual characteristics of the female body. It is only noticed that it begins only after the fertilized egg enters the uterus and becomes fixed there. This happens no earlier than 5 days after fertilization of the egg; in this case, 9 days pass after ovulation.
But not all women implantation of the fertilized egg into the uterus occurs at the same time. Borders can shift both up and down. If the period of consolidation of the fertilized egg is delayed too much, then the pregnancy may not survive, as menstruation begins.
How to get rid of toxicosis
If during pregnancy you begin to suffer from toxicosis, then you will not be able to completely eliminate its manifestations. There are only a few steps you can take to ease its severity and reduce symptoms.
Here are some tips:
- Don't get out of bed right away in the morning. While lying down, eat a small piece of bread or a cracker and wash it down with juice or plain water. For convenience, it is better to prepare food in the evening, leaving it next to the bed within reach.
- If you plan to spend the day outside the house, take some snacks with you. These can be fruits or the same crackers; in case of nausea, take mints and a bottle of water.
- If salivation is high, to relieve nausea, rinse your mouth with an infusion of sage or chamomile.
- Do not take medications that purport to relieve toxicosis. Be sure to consult your doctor about this. To cleanse the body, it is better to drink decoctions of chamomile or rose hips.
Is it possible to avoid toxicosis?
To prevent possible toxicosis, take care of your health even before pregnancy. Try to get rid of all ailments, especially chronic ones, increase your immunity.
When you become pregnant, reconsider your food. It is recommended to divide the daily diet into several small portions. Avoid junk food. It is better to eat plant foods so that animal protein does not poison the body. It can be porridge with water, boiled or raw vegetables. A small amount of lean meat is allowed. As an additional snack, you can eat some fruit or raw vegetable.
It is important to maintain a water-salt balance during toxicosis. You should drink a lot of water, and it is better to avoid harmful drinks like coffee, sweet water with carbonation and others.
