Causes of conflicts at work
Why does tension arise between colleagues?
Unfortunately, there are many reasons for work conflicts:
- Unclear distribution of work responsibilities by management. In this case, one of the employees may be tempted to shift some of their work to a colleague. Naturally, a conflict of interest arises.
- Psychological incompatibility of workers. For example, if a choleric person and a phlegmatic person work nearby, it may be difficult for them to calmly perceive each other.
- Hostility of a personal nature. If for some reason a personal conflict arises between colleagues, it will most likely spread to the working relationship. Here, a lot depends on the attitude of the entire team to the situation and its cohesion.
- Misunderstanding between colleagues. It happens that people working together do not seem to express any particular hostility towards one another, but different social status, level of education, and manner of behavior interfere with their normal communication.
Conflicts at work: how to resolve them
Any conflict poisons life, so it is necessary to resolve it as soon as possible. The resolution of a conflict situation can be influenced both by the participants themselves, as well as by the immediate supervisor and other members of the team.
Here are some tips on how to quickly resolve conflict at work.
- Firstly, you should not show excessive aggression, snap and get personal. You should behave politely, even emphatically. This is not a sign of weakness; on the contrary, it will discourage your opponent and help put him in his place. You should also not constantly complain to your colleagues about the offender, especially since the conflict can quarrel between them.
- Secondly, the person is worth listening to. It is quite possible that the problem is not as deep as it seems, he is simply influenced by someone else's opinion, and with a frank personal conversation, the differences will be resolved.
- If the conflict still cannot be resolved on your own, you can inform your boss. Still, you are at work, and any psychological problems harm the common cause.
Conflicts at work: how to prevent them
To avoid conflicts at work, you should adhere to certain rules:
- When applying for a job, find out your responsibilities in detail. Don’t be shy, it’s better to clarify something with your boss and study the job description in advance.
- Do not give rise to conflicts. It is necessary to maintain neutrality in relations with colleagues, to be calm and correct, not to slander or gossip.

- In conflicts within a team, you should not support either side too actively.
- The simplest but most effective advice: you need to treat your colleagues the way you would like to be treated. That is, be interested, show sympathy, and do not refuse small requests. Another good helper in any relationship, including work relationships, is a sense of humor.
- If there are various manifestations of envy or hostility, do not be nervous. It is better to treat such behavior with irony. However, it is advisable to find out the reasons for this attitude. Sometimes it is useful to talk frankly with ill-wishers.
If desired, any conflict can always be resolved. In any case, a bad peace is better than a good quarrel, and reaching a compromise with your opponent will be a better solution than firing or trying to get rid of an unwanted colleague.
