What is the normal temperature in cats
A body temperature of about 38 or 39 degrees is considered normal for cats. Minor fluctuations are possible due to various factors. For example, in many respects the temperature depends on the age of the animal and even the time of day. If the cat is asleep or has just woken up, its body temperature will be slightly lower. This is due to the fact that during rest the animal needs less energy than during running or playing.
The younger the cat, the higher its normal body temperature. For example, in kittens normal temperature differs from the body temperature of an adult animal by about 0.5 degrees upwards. This is because babies need more energy. In newborns kittens this figure is even higher. Their natural temperature ranges from 40-40.5 degrees.
How to measure your cat's temperature
The best way to check your cat's body temperature is to use a rectal thermometer. A similar method will give more accurate indicators. Indeed, unlike a person, an animal cannot be measured the temperature under the armpit or in the mouth. However, please note that you may need outside help to keep animal at least some time in a calm position.
- Choose a time for the measurement when your pet is in a calm mood or asleep.
- The thermometer sensor must be clean, or even better, sterile treated so that the animal does not accidentally become infected.
- Wrap the cat tightly with a blanket, all paws pressed tightly. The head and butt should be free.
- Treat the thermometer sensor with a greasy substance. It can be petroleum jelly or oil.
- Lift the animal's tail and gently insert the tip of the device into the anal passage. Do not enter far, only 0.5 cm is enough. Reject the thermometer so that it touches the rectum of the animal.
- Wait for the beep and pull out the device. Please note that the mercury thermometer must be kept for at least 3 minutes.
- During the entire procedure, soothe the cat with your voice and stroking so that the animal does not perceive the temperature measurement as a punishment. After completing the measurement, praise and feed the pet with a treat to relieve stress.
What to do if your cat has a high fever
In these animals, the temperature sometimes rises due to stress. For example, when visiting a veterinarian. If the animal did not have any shock, then this is a sign of illness. With a significant increase in temperature, you should try to determine the cause of this condition and show the animal to the doctor as soon as possible.
Do not give your cat an antipyretic agent on your own. Not every drug can be used on an animal. Some medications can harm your cat. It is best to put ice between the paws of the animal, or at least moisten its fur with water. Give your cat small amounts of water to prevent critical moisture loss.
