Budleya: planting and care
The budley plant is also called a magnet for butterflies due to the fact that it attracts with its aroma these very insects for pollination. Budleia flowers are very similar to clusters of lilacs, which gave rise to call this shrub autumn lilac.
Landing budley
Plant Budley is possible in the spring, when the threat of late frosts has passed. It is best to find a place for this plant with good lighting and protection from gusts of wind. The soil for the shrub must be nutritious, moist and fertile. The groundwater should not be close to the plant's root system.
Budlea is prone to overgrowth, so it is best to maintain a decent distance between the bushes. Dig a hole with a side of 40 cm, the depth of the hole should be equal to the length of the roots, taking into account drainage and fertilization. At the bottom of the pit, a layer of large drainage should be laid and a mound of soil mixed with mineral fertilizers should be poured. You can also add some compost. Place a seedling on top of this mound and cover it with earth on all sides. Thoroughly tamp the soil and water, and cover the trunk circle with compost. Place the root collar of the plant at soil level.
Outdoor budley
Suitable for our country varieties Budleys able to withstand low temperatures in winter. These include David's budley, Witch's budley, Wilson's budley, and White-flowered budley. It is not difficult to grow a budley in open ground conditions, but nevertheless, certain rules must be observed:
- Prune the plant in time so that it blooms longer and more luxuriantly.
- Water the shrubs regularly, preventing the soil from drying out.
- Fertilize periodically.
- Prepare the plant for wintering.
- In no case should you transplant to a new place.
Budleya - care
Let's take a closer look at how look after for a budley, so that it pleases for a long time with its flowering. This perennial shrub does not require additional watering. But if the summer is hot and dry, it is necessary to periodically moisten the soil at the rate of one bucket bush of water.
The plant grows very quickly and stretches up to two meters in length. In order for it to bloom magnificently and for a long time, it is necessary to make top dressing. Usually, for this purpose, preparations containing potassium and phosphorus are used, designed to enhance growth and flowering. Throughout the summer, Budley is fed three times. The best effect can be achieved by alternating the application of mineral fertilizers and organic top dressing... We recommend using compost, liquid manure or humus as the latter. For good development, the plant needs air access to the roots. To this end, after each watering, be sure to loosen the soil and remove weeds.
To extend the flowering period of a budlea, it must be pruned in time. Plus, by pruning, you will keep the shrub look attractive. This procedure must be carried out in the spring, before the plant starts to grow. Budleia cultivars with low stature are pruned at a distance of 30 cm from the soil. Tall cultivars should be pruned at a meter height. This will give you a compact and attractive shrub that will bloom for a long time.
Budleia is not transplanted, but for successful wintering it must be properly prepared. For this, in the fall, a second pruning of the plant shoots is carried out. Then the bush must be covered with earth. On top of the bodeli bush, a wooden structure should be installed as a frame on which roofing material is reinforced. This will protect the plant even from strong gusts of wind. It is not necessary to use sawdust or film as a cover, so that the root system of the plant and shoots do not squeeze under them.
