How to get rid of fleas in your home
Most people tend to think that only pets can cause fleas in the house. However, they also believe that it will be enough to treat the pet's coat with an anti-flea drug and the problem will disappear. But fleas are able to start in the apartment and for other reasons.
Where do fleas come from?
These small parasitic insects are less than 5 millimeters in size. Thanks to their thorns on the body, they perfectly cling to animal hair and people's clothing. They can also settle in the feathers of birds. Due to the special structure of the paws, fleas are able to jump to a very great height, which is several tens of times larger than their own size.
Flea bites cause severe itching, allergies and can lead to dangerous viral infections. Therefore, it is necessary to cleanse your house from this muck in time.
There may be several reasons for the appearance of parasites in an apartment:
- Most often, fleas enter the house on the fur of pets. They accumulate on the face, neck, tail and ears of the animal, get drunk on its blood and give the unfortunate person great anxiety with their bites.
- Another possible cause is dampness in the house. On the lower floors of the house, fleas emerge from the basement, where the humidity is usually high. The presence of heating pipes and moisture creates ideal breeding conditions for fleas. From the basement, insects make their way into the apartments.
- Fleas that live on basement mice and rats enter the house with these rodents. Their small size allows parasites to settle in baseboards, crevices, carpet pile, furniture and clothing. There they are waiting for an opportunity to feast on someone's blood.
How to get rid of pet fleas

After that, you need to start cleaning the apartment. Thoroughly wipe all surfaces in your home with a damp cloth, and vacuum up textiles and carpets. Then hide all the food in containers. If you have aquarium, close it. Now wash all things that can be treated this way. Anything that cannot be washed, take it outside and warm it up in the sun.
Now treat your home with a special anti-flea drug. Consult a specialist with the choice. Now there is a very wide range of such products. It is better for all people and animals to leave the apartment during processing. After a few hours, it will be possible to ventilate the room.

Flea prevention
Flea preventive measures aim to maintain purity and order in the apartment. Do damp mopping, carpets and upholstered furniture regularly. Tidy up the plumbing, fix leaks, keep the washroom dry. It is better to add disinfectants to water for cleaning floors and other surfaces. You can add wormwood or another herb with a strong odor to the water. Fleas do not tolerate this scent. Be sure to ventilate the room, these insects do not like cleanliness in the house.
If you have an animal in your home, buy an anti-flea collar for it. It will not get rid of fleas at all, but it will scare away these parasites for a while. Periodically inspect the pet's coat, treat it with special preparations, wash it with antiparasitic shampoos.
