Mostly from smell mold suffer bathroom and kitchen. The humidity there is higher than in the rest of the apartment, and condensation can form on the walls.
If you smell the smell of mold, then somewhere the fungus itself has appeared. It is not difficult to notice - black spots appear in some places on the walls and especially in the corners. If you don't take action, they will spread. It is useless to clog the smell with aromatic agents; here, radical measures are needed to eliminate the mold itself.
First you need to locate the area affected by the fungus. Inspect all the walls in the apartment, pay special attention to the kitchen and bathroom. Don't forget to move the cabinets aside and examine the inside of the furniture.
The colony of the fungus itself and the unpleasant odor that comes from it are perfectly removed by special preparations sold in hardware departments of stores. They kill the fungus and at the same time have a preventive effect, eliminating high humidity.
In addition to industrial means, you can also use folk methods of combating mold. However, if the fungus has spread over a large area, you cannot cope without the help of specialists.
How to remove the smell of mold in an apartment
One of the best ways to eliminate mold and the smell from it is a special primer with antiseptic properties. Before applying it, the surface must be cleaned of traces of fungal damage and decorative coating and then applied with a brush. This method will prevent further mold growth.
However, it is convenient to use a primer with an antiseptic only at the repair stage, or you will have to do the repairs specially. Therefore, with minor mold damage, it makes sense to use other means:
- Fabric bleach has a detrimental effect on the fungal environment. It destroys both external manifestations of mold and its spores. Bleach can be used to clean ceramic tiles, glass and plaster. When working with bleach, ensure that the room is well ventilated and wear protective gloves to avoid burns.
- 9% table vinegar fights mold quite well. Its smell is unpleasant, but it does not emit any toxic fumes. To remove mold, vinegar is sprayed onto the stain or simply wiped off with a rag soaked in it.
- Hydrogen peroxide has proven to work well in the fight against mold. This product is sold in pharmacies. It is safe for humans. Hydrogen peroxide can be used on many surfaces. First you need to try its effect on a small, inconspicuous area. The fact is that hydrogen peroxide can discolor some surfaces.
- To eliminate mold on slightly porous surfaces, ammonia can be used. It removes fungus well from glass or tiles. Before use, ammonia is diluted with water and sprayed onto the moldy area. When working with ammonia, it is recommended to use a respirator, as it has a strong, specific odor.
How to remove mold smell from closet
If a moldy odor appears in the closet, it is urgent to examine it and identify the source. Otherwise, mold may spread to things and then they will be hopelessly damaged.
Wash items that can be treated this way. Those that cannot be washed should be dry cleaned. If the mold smell is weak, dry them in the sun.
Move the cabinet itself away from the wall and carefully examine the outside and all the internal shelves. Remove sources of contamination so that the unpleasant odor itself disappears. Baking soda works well to combat mold on furniture. It is safe, but quite effective against mold. The surfaces of the cabinet should be wiped with a rag soaked in a soda solution, and then the remaining soda should be removed with water.
After treatment, the cabinet must be left open for several days so that it dries thoroughly. Only after this can you put cleaned and washed items in it.
