How to sew a sundress
Sundress is the most popular women's clothing for the summer. It allows you to look feminine even in the hottest heat; you will never feel hot in it. At home, you can sew a wide variety of sundresses without having the skills of a professional seamstress. We'll tell you how to do this in this article.
Fabric for sundresses
Since a sundress is a purely summer outfit that will be worn under the hot sun, the fabric from which it will be sewn should be light so that the body breathes and does not sweat. Not all fabrics have these qualities. To sew a light summer sundress, it is preferable to choose:
- Len. Many people still have the association that this material is very hard and uncomfortable, but now this opinion is wrong. The modern textile industry offers a huge selection of linen fabrics, which have different compositions and, accordingly, degrees of hardness. But flax is a natural material that has very high strength; you will feel normal in it even at +30°C. Among the few disadvantages of the material, one can note only its ability to crumble heavily when cut and the fact that it wrinkles quickly. Therefore, sewing such material without an overlocker is not recommended. Be sure to decorate the fabric as it can shrink quite a bit.

- If you want to pamper yourself, then choose silk. Like linen, it is a natural material, but it looks simply gorgeous. It perfectly absorbs moisture, is pleasant to the body, has a cooling effect on the body, allows air to pass through well and drapes beautifully. The only disadvantage of natural silk is that it can fade in the sun and requires very careful handling.

- Chiffon is also a good lightweight material for sewing a sundress, but it also has its drawbacks. This material is very slippery, you need to take extra care with things made of chiffon; low-quality chiffon can quickly fade and fade. But it is breathable and drapes beautifully.

- Summer sundresses made of lace look luxurious. Guipure has many advantages, but it is difficult to work with.

- Viscose fabrics are now at the peak of popularity. This is an excellent material for summer outfits. The variety of colors and varieties of viscose is amazing, just what one staple costs. The fabric is very durable, breathable and absorbs moisture.

- Knitwear. A universal material mostly of natural origin. It stretches well and fits beautifully, but some varieties shrink very much. Therefore, be sure to decate the fabric before sewing.

There are a lot of materials that can be used for sewing sundresses, but each of them is special in use. If before this your sewing skills were limited to sewing on buttons and sewing up holes, then to sew a summer dress, take a simpler fabric - cotton or linen, for example. You can, of course, take a risk and take knitwear or viscose, but be prepared for the fact that the fabric will most likely simply be damaged and your money will be wasted.
Sundress patterns
Sundresses can come in a variety of designs, from primitive, which even a teenager can handle, to complex ones, which are unlikely to be suitable for a beginner. In this article we will look at very simple patterns from the first option. We offer you a selection of videos where girls sew very simple sundress styles.
Sundresses without a pattern
If you’re really short on time, and you desperately need a sundress for an evening walk, don’t despair - there’s always a way out! For example, why not create a light dress without creating complex patterns. As a rule, sewing such a sundress takes no more than half an hour, and the result is amazing.
For example, we offer a version of a sundress that is cut according to a T-shirt, without additional patterns. To sew it, you only need to know the length of the desired sundress. When cutting, remember that if you have large breasts, then the front of the sundress needs to be made longer than the bottom, then when wearing it, the front, when it lies across the chest, will not ride up. By the way, this year the asymmetrical hem is coming back into fashion, which is very simple to make by cutting out such a sundress. Just draw the back hem line to the desired level below the front and voila, a fashionable sundress is ready!
Sundresses of this type are very easy to cut. In essence, it is a simple pipe with an elastic band at the top, and so that the look does not get boring, everything is decorated with an accessory in the form of a belt. Start by measuring the widest part of your body, this could be your chest, waist or hips. After this, measure the desired length of the sundress. Let's say the largest measurement turned out to be the hip circumference - 96 cm. To this measurement you need to add additional width so that the finished sundress does not fit the hips. Exactly how much it will be is up to you to decide whether you want it looser or a little more hip. In our case it will be 10 cm + 2 cm for the seams. In total, the width of the canvas will be 108 cm, and the length will be 110 (when calculating the length, remember that part of it will go to the belt, since it will shorten the product a little). Cut a rectangle (in our case it's almost a square) from the fabric and sew a single seam on a machine to create a tube. Sew an elastic band along the top line, which will allow the dress to sit on the chest and not fly off - it can be a continuation of the sundress and look out, or, alternatively, it can be folded down. The final step will be hemming the bottom. That's all, the light and cute sundress is ready!
The next sundress is sewn so simply that the process itself does not need any comments.
Another option for sundresses, which can be cut directly on the fabric, looks like this:
Such sundresses can be cut according to your own imagination. Just trust your inner creative nature and go ahead!
