How to sew an a-line skirt
The A-line skirt came to us from the 60s, as did the A-line silhouette, emphasizing the waist and hips, and slightly widening towards the bottom. You can also wear this skirt as an evening outfit, complementing it with a matching top and massive accessories, which are very fashionable this season. An A-line skirt will be appropriate both in the office, unless, of course, it is ultra-mini, and on a walk, and at any time of the year, depending on the fabric from which it is made.

How to sew an a-line skirt with your own hands: master class
Before you start sewing an A-line skirt, decide on its length and what season you plan to wear it in - based on this, take your measurements and select the fabric. This skirt, despite its simplicity, looks quite elegant if you choose the right top. The A-line cut is best suited for girls with wide shoulders and narrow hips: an A-shaped silhouette will make your hips wider, which will visually bring your figure closer to the ideal “hourglass”.
When starting cutting, you should already know:
- semi-hip circumference;
- half waist circumference;
- skirt length.
Having created a pattern of the required size and cut the fabric, sew the side seams of the skirt. Seal the waistband with adhesive backing and sew a zipper on the side. Please note that the seams cut on the bias stretch a lot, therefore, when hemming the bottom edge of the skirt on a sewing machine, folds are formed along the hem. If you do not want this, then process the edge manually or leave it as is - this will add a kind of “zest” to the skirt.
How to sew an a-line skirt: pattern
Sewing an a-line skirt is quite simple, so this skirt model will suit you well as your first large project. Another big advantage is that such a skirt cannot be damaged: it does not tolerate patch pockets, any darts, or the like. You can decorate it only with decorative embroidery, a narrow strap, or leave it without decorations at all - it will complement itself. If you are sewing a skirt for the summer, we recommend that you use brightly colored fabrics that already have patterns.
It’s good if before this you have already sewed a classic straight skirt in your size and you still have the full-size pattern. This way you can sew an A-line skirt even faster, just by widening the pattern towards the bottom by closing the darts at the waist.
- Create a life-size pattern for sewing a straight skirt in your size, as shown in Figure No. 1.
- Make cuts from the tops of the darts to the bottom edge of the skirt, as in picture No. 2.
- Draw the hem of the skirt with a smooth, rounded line.
- You should end up with 2 almost identical parts: back and front.
- Since you will be cutting the skirt on the bias, the patterns need to be solid - it is better not to fold the fabric when cutting. Using this pattern you can sew an A-line skirt of any length.
