Childhood enuresis: causes and treatment
Disorders of the urination process have been known since ancient times. The onset of the disease can be considered when a child, after reaching 5 years of age, continues to wear pants and wakes up wet at night. In this article we will look at the causes of enuresis and how to treat it.
Causes of enuresis
Enuresis can cause significant psychological trauma to a child if measures are not taken promptly. In kindergarten, children can make fun of this fact, and teachers can scold and punish. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the causes of this disease, because the child himself is uncomfortable and ashamed of what is happening.
Possible causes of enuresis:
- complicated pregnancy and childbirth;
- immature nervous system;
- hyperactivity and overexcitement;
- dysfunction of the bladder or its small volume;
- genitourinary system infections or colds, ARVI;
- problems with the kidneys or endocrine system;
- genetic inheritance;
- depression;
- stressful situation;
- global changes (change of kindergarten, school, birth of a brother or sister);
- irregular daily routine.
If you note at least one reason why the problem arose, then consult a doctor immediately.
Treatment of enuresis
First, contact your pediatrician. He will write out a referral for tests and refer you to specialists:
- neurologist;
- urologist;
- psychiatrist or psychologist.
Don't be afraid of a referral to a psychiatrist. This does not mean that your child suffers from psychological problems. The doctor must understand what is causing the disease. If psychological trauma has been caused, then it is in your interests to visit a psychologist and eradicate the problem.
The urologist prescribes the following studies:
- Ultrasound of the kidneys.
- Ultrasound of the urinary tract.
- Studies of daily urine volume.
- Frequency of going to the toilet or potty.
Only after a complete examination and comprehensive research, the doctor prescribes therapy. The drugs and procedures mainly used are acupuncture, electrophoresis, hypnosis, psychotherapy and laser therapy.
You cannot try to cure enuresis on your own.
It is also prohibited to use folk remedies. Exceptions include doctor's recommendations.
Only a competent specialist can solve the problem of enuresis.
Prevention of enuresis
Every parent wants their child to be healthy and this requires preventive measures:
- Timely weaning off diapers. Children over two years of age must learn to be neat.
- Controlling the amount of fluid consumed. 3-4 hours before bedtime, you should limit drinking too much.
- Talk and show about the rules of caring for the genitals.
- Avoid shock or stressful situations.
- Night awakenings. At the same time put your child on the potty. Be sure to wake up your baby, because in a half-asleep state he will not understand what you want from him. Over time, the child will learn to wake up with the desire to go to the toilet.
- Limit the consumption of diuretic foods (watermelon, melon, apricot, cherry, etc.).
Treating enuresis requires a lot of patience. Remember that this disease is curable and the process of urination can be learned to control. The main thing is not to scold your child for an unpleasant incident. Surround him with care, warmth and love.
