How to calculate stitches for a knitted skirt

To calculate the number of loops for your size, you need:

• make a life-size pattern for the product (for example, by tracing each detail of a finished item in your size);
• knit 1 pattern repeat according to the chosen pattern with the threads you will start knitting the product with;
• calculate the number of loops in 1 cm;
• Compare your data with the product diagram or make your own calculations.

Please note that to knit a skirt, the fabric must be made thick enough, otherwise the skirt will be see-through and you will have to sew an additional lining.

How to knit a simple skirt

There is very little left until summer, so we chose a simple straight skirt knitted from thin threads. Knitting requires less yarn than crocheting, so for such a skirt you will need no more than 350 g of cotton yarn.

• Cast on 111 stitches.
• Knit 8 rows according to pattern No. 1 in different colors as in the photo, or 24 rows with the main color, then the skirt will be monochromatic.
• Knit 20 rows according to pattern No. 2.
• 90 rows according to pattern No. 3.
• 1 row with facial loops.
• Start reducing the number of loops: knit 10 purl loops at the beginning of the row, * connect 2 loops, knit 2 purl loops, connect 2 purl loops *. Repeat 22 times from * to * and knit the remaining 11 purl stitches.
• If you did everything correctly, you should have 88 stitches left on your needles.
• Knit 4 rows, alternating purl and knit rows.
• Knit 4 stitches, knit 2 stitches together, * knit 9, join 2 stitches *. Repeat from * to * 7 times and knit the remaining 5 knit stitches.
• Work 5 rows in garter stitch to finish the piece.

How to knit a pleated skirt

• On needles No. 4, cast on 201 loops and knit according to pattern No. 1.

• Having knitted the fabric to the required size, close the loops. As a rule, the average length of a straight skirt is 85 cm.
• Sew the skirt along the back seam, leaving a slit of about 35 cm at the bottom.

Ribbon yarn is more reminiscent not of yarn or thread, but of braid or, more precisely, regular ribbon. Such threads make very unique products, especially dresses or skirts. It is better to knit regular patterns with ribbon yarn, without any quirks; it itself is very unusual and beautiful. There is a small nuance when knitting with such threads: their ends unravel very easily, so special attention must be paid to securing the tails.

Ribbon yarn varies in thickness from the thinnest, barely noticeable ribbon, to a wide one, from which very beautiful flounces and ruffles are obtained. This yarn is most often used to knit children's skirts and dresses, scarves and items for interior decoration: tablecloths, lampshades.

We chose a simple baby skirt with ruffles, knitted in a solid, wide ribbon yarn. Despite the simple, uncomplicated knitting, a skirt made from such yarn turns out to be very interesting.

For such a skirt you will need one skein of ribbon yarn and the remains of ordinary cotton threads that match the color. It is also better to knit such a skirt on circular knitting needles, otherwise the side seams will be very noticeable.

1. Using ribbon yarn, cast on 100 stitches on circular needles and close them into a circle.
2. Without cutting the ribbon yarn, knit 4 rows in stockinette stitch.
3. On the fifth row, add ribbon yarn (doubling each stitch).
4. Repeat steps 1 and 2, adding loops as necessary, according to the size of the skirt, until you reach the desired length.
