How to grow greens
Over time, any housewife realizes that it would be great if fresh herbs are always at hand. It doesn't matter if it's summer or winter. After all, you can grow almost any greenery yourself. It just takes a little patience.
What greens can be grown
Most often, an ordinary one is grown at home. onion... As a planting material, you can take small bulbs for seedlings, which are called onion sets, or adult large bulbs. Small bulbs take longer to germinate and yield less yield. But on the other hand, green onions from small onions turn out to be tender and pleasant to the taste. From large bulbs, you can use the harvest in a week.
Another crop that you can grow yourself is dill. Of course, it is more difficult to grow it than onion. The reason for this is the long-term germination of seeds in winter. The easiest way is to buy seedlings of this plant and plant them in pots.
Parsley is also very popular with our housewives. This fragrant herb grows slowly and loves light. Therefore, it is better to place it on a sunny windowsill. But on the other hand, it tolerates temperature changes well and is not demanding on watering.
You can grow cilantro at home. She prefers fertile soil, but is not demanding on temperature. It grows fast enough if watered on time.
Basil, unpretentious to care for, needs an abundance of sunlight. After planting the seeds, the container must be covered with a film until shoots appear. You can also grow a plant from a cut off stem. Just place it in water and wait for the roots to appear, and then drop it into the ground.
How to grow greens on a windowsill
First, prepare everything you need to create a small vegetable garden on the windowsill. You will need:
- Plastic or wood containers, or regular flower pots.
- Good priming for planting plants.
- Quality seed that can be purchased from your specialist store.
- Fertilizers intended for feeding greens.
- Lamps to illuminate plants in winter when the daylight hours are short.
So that the plants do not get sick and are not damaged by pests, it is better not to use the land from the garden or black soil. It is better to purchase a special soil mixture in the store. It is sold already cleaned of impurities and debris. There are no pests in it that will spoil your future harvest.
In order for the greens to grow actively, they need to be well lit. Considering this circumstance, place containers with herbs on windowsills facing south or southeast. In winter, when the daylight hours are short, the plants need additional lighting. To do this, use lamps.
Before sowing seeds, carefully read the instructions that came with the package and follow them. Water your plantings regularly to keep the ground from drying out. However, do not overfill the plants so that they do not start to rot. To prevent this from happening, be sure to make special drainage holes in the containers through which excess moisture will leave.
For glaze use only settled water to reduce the amount of salt that gets on the plants. If you use clay pots and containers, you will need a little more water for irrigation, because some of the moisture will be absorbed by microscopic pores in the clay. Less water is needed for plastic containers.
Make sure the temperature in the room is within the normal range. When the first crop appears, do not cut the plant close to the ground. It will be better if you begin to cut a little from each bush. This will allow the plant to grow further and it will again delight you with fresh greens. If you follow these simple guidelines, you can enjoy fresh herbs all year round.
