The hardened deposits on the surface of the tooth enamel are called tartar. This phenomenon not only spoils the appearance of the teeth, but is also very harmful to health. Various methods are used to get rid of tartar and prevent its further formation.

Tartar damage
The initial stage of the process of calculus formation is the formation of plaque on the surface of the teeth. This usually happens a few hours after cleansing. Plaque becomes an excellent breeding ground for dangerous bacteria. As a result of their vital activity, substances are produced that provoke the appearance of caries.
If regular hygienic cleaning of teeth is not carried out or it is carried out incorrectly, then over time, soft plaque becomes harder, acquires a yellowish tint and turns into tartar. Gradually, the shade of the stone deposits becomes darker and turns into a brown or even greenish color. In addition, a person with tartar has an unpleasant odor from the mouth.
Initially, hard deposits form on the inner surfaces of the teeth. Over time, they descend into the gum groove and prevent oxygen from penetrating into the tissues. This creates good conditions for the reproduction of pathogenic microbes. All this leads to the development of a wide variety of diseases:
- Caries develops under the influence of streptococci. It darkens the tooth enamel and gradually destroys it.
- Gingivitis causes teeth to weaken, loose and fall out.
- Periodontal disease softens the interdental bone tissue and leads to the exposure of the neck of the teeth.
- Periodontitis causes bleeding gums and tooth loss.
- Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract develop under the influence of pathogenic microbes that penetrate from the oral cavity.
How dentists remove tartar
The easiest way to remove tartar deposits is in dentistry. The specialist will do it as carefully and efficiently as possible for the enamel. Four methods of removing tartar are now practiced:
- Mechanical cleaning is carried out with a drill. When the bur is rotated, the stone deposits are detached from the surface of the teeth. Then the enamel is polished. In this way, only surface deposits are removed. In addition, this technique is quite painful.
- Ultrasonic cleaning is able to cope not only with the external manifestations of the stone, but also with those that form under the gums. In addition, pathogens are killed under the influence of an ultrasonic wave. In places where the enamel is especially thin, soreness can be felt during the cleaning process, therefore in some cases anesthesia is used.
- Laser cleaning removes deposits in the safest way. With this technique, cleaning is carried out non-contact, so the enamel of the tooth is not destroyed. Under the influence of a laser beam, tartar is destroyed to a powder state and washed out with a stream of water. In the process of cleaning, the enamel is whitened, and the oral cavity is also disinfected.
- Chemical cleaning consists in the fact that a special agent is applied to the tartar to soften it. After that, the deposits are easily separated from the surface of the teeth. This method cannot be called effective, since it does not allow the stone to dissolve completely. In addition, if the product is applied incorrectly or if its validity period is not observed, the tooth enamel can be damaged.
Tartar cleaning
It is necessary to carry out professional cleaning of dental calculus regularly. This should be done at least once a year. This is useful not only in terms of aesthetics. After removing deposits, the doctor is able to objectively assess the state of the oral cavity, detect early manifestations of caries and, if necessary, choose a shade of filling material that will completely match the color of natural enamel.
To remove fossilized formations, the old plaque is first affected. In some cases, this procedure can be uncomfortable or even painful. Therefore, sometimes pain relief is required. Then the surface of the tooth is polished, which gives the crown an even healthy shade. In conclusion, the enamel is fluoridated with strengthening coatings.
Removing tartar at home
It is difficult to deal with tartar on your own, but in the absence of the opportunity to seek professional help, you can resort to folk methods. For example, with prolonged and regular use, honey water helps to get rid of stone deposits. A spoon dissolves in a glass of liquid honey and this solution is used as a mouthwash before bed. You need to rinse every day for several months to see the first results.
It will take a little less time to remove the stone with salt. It is applied to a brush moistened with water and the teeth are brushed in places where there is a stone for 3 minutes. In the first 20 days, this should be done daily, then they switch to salt cleaning every other day. After 2 months, the procedure is performed weekly.
A decoction made from linden blossom and sunflower, mixed in equal amounts, has a good effect on tartar. To prepare the broth, take 4 tablespoons of the mixture and fill it with a liter of water. All are boiled for half an hour over low heat. The finished strained broth is used for rinsing the mouth or for brushing teeth.
These folk methods allow you to achieve a gradual softening of tartar and its dissolution. For the best effect, it is necessary to carry out proper oral hygiene and regularly change the toothbrush.
Prevention of tartar
As you know, it is easier to prevent a problem than to deal with it later. Therefore, to prevent the formation of hard deposits on the teeth, you need to adhere to certain rules. The most important of these is regular, thorough cleaning of the dentition at least twice a day. It allows you to get rid of the teeth from soft deposits, which then become tartar.
It is important to rinse your mouth every night with a special rinse. Such formulations contain antiseptic substances to eliminate pathogenic microbes.
It is recommended to brush your teeth with toothpaste after each meal. If it is not possible to do this, you need to rinse your mouth rinse aid or chewing sugar-free gum.
Your teeth will cleanse themselves if you regularly include hard, raw vegetables and fruits in the menu. In this regard, raw carrot or hard apples.
