It is necessary to conduct an audit of all products, examine all shelves and cabinets in search of what may attract these insects... Most of all, midges like sour fruits, sour compote or jam, but they also do not disdain rotting vegetables, nuts, and dried fruits. Sometimes fruit flies start even in cereals.

Having found a suitable vegetable, they start eating and lay their eggs there. In just a day, it will turn into a larva, which will also feed on a rotten product. A few more days will pass and a pupa will appear from the larva, which in 10 days will become an adult fruit fly.

The grown insects lay eggs again, fly to other products and infect them. This process can go on indefinitely. Therefore, it is better to immediately destroy all midges.

How to get rid of midges in the kitchen

The first enemy for these insects is cleanliness in the room. Therefore, before using poisons and other means to destroy midges, you need to put things in order in the room:

  • Find all the places where insects fly from and throw away spoiled and infested food.
  • Do general cleaning in the kitchen on a regular basis.
  • Do not leave the bin full overnight and wash it regularly.
  • Store all food in the refrigerator and place in airtight containers.
  • Pay particular attention to the cleanliness around the sink.

If vegetables are stored improperly, they begin to rot and attract midges with this. They cannot be stored in cellophane bags. Lack of air provokes rotting, which is especially attractive for midges. Therefore, when these insects it is necessary to sort out all the vegetables, put them in boxes, and throw out the infected fruits. The smell of conifers will help drive away living individuals. It can be a coniferous branch or just the aroma of needles, sprayed around the apartment and next to vegetables.

Midges are capable of infecting cereals. It enters the products at the stage of their packaging at the enterprise or on the market. In this case, it is almost impossible to save food from contamination. It will be necessary to sort out all the cereals and destroy the eggs of insects, which are very difficult to notice in the cereal. Therefore, it is easier to simply throw out the contaminated product. As a preventive measure against midges, lavrushka or garlic should be placed in places where cereals are stored.

For the destruction of adult fruit flies, special traps are very effective. A little jam is poured into a glass jar so that the viscous liquid covers the bottom. A sheet of paper rolled up in a cone is installed on top so that a small hole remains. Insects will fly to the aroma of spoiled jam, and will no longer be able to fly out from under the cone.

If there is no way to make a similar trap, then simply put pieces of fruit in a plastic bag and leave it in the sun. Soon the food will start to rot and attract fruit flies. Then wait until there are enough midges on the spoiled food and quickly close the bag.
