The Vikings believed that the flowers of this plant are the keys of the goddess Freya, opening spring. And in Germany, this plant was considered a symbol of marriage.

Planting primrose
This plant belongs to perennials. In the open ground it are planted only in the second year of their life, namely at the end of May. Primrose does not like direct sunlight, so it is planted in shady places, for example, under the shade of trees or shrubs. Light soil is suitable for this flower, which is able to pass water well through itself. Clay soil is well suited for this purpose. If the clay soil is too heavy, you can add sand, vermiculite and sphagnum moss to it.
When planting small primroses, keep a distance of 15 centimeters between plants. If the primrose has large flowers, then double this distance. Primrose loves crampedness. Therefore, keep the distance so that the planting is solid after the plants are growing.
Primrose varieties
There are many varieties of primrose, all of them are of a certain decorative interest. The most common varieties primroses are as follows:
- The spring primrose is the earliest to bloom. It begins to bloom in April and ends in May. This plant stretches up to 30 centimeters. Most often, the plant is colored yellow, but sometimes two-colored primroses are also found.
- The flowering period of the large-cup primrose is from the end of April to May. This variety of primrose has yellow flowers with orange specks. Her inflorescences are in the shape of an umbrella. Plants of this variety grow up to 35 cm.
- Lilac flowers are distinguished by a toothed primrose. As the name of this variety says, its flowers are covered with small teeth at the edges. This plant is quite tall. It can grow up to half a meter in height.
- Julia's primrose also blooms early. This is a stunted plant that grows only 15 cm. The flowers of this primrose are painted in purple-pink tones.
Primrose transplant
The primroses must be transplanted. The fact is that their rhizome grows obliquely upwards. Sooner or later, the rhizome comes to the surface and then the plant inevitably dies.
To easily extract primrose from the soil, the plant must be watered before this. Dig up the flower along with the earthy clod, carefully clean the root system from the soil and rinse it in water. Then divide the bush into several pieces by cutting it with a knife. At the same time, make sure that there is at least one flowering bud in each part.
Prepare holes for planting primroses, the depth of each hole should be about 15 cm. In them, lay fertilizers with phosphorus or potassium and plant primroses in them. To help the plants take root, give them shade and water frequently in the first two weeks. To better retain moisture and protect the flower from garden pests, lay a layer of mulch.
Home primrose
IN indoor conditions you can successfully grow this plant. For this, Primula Chinese, Primula Myagkovataya, Primula Ushkovaya and some others are suitable. For home primroses, it is important to maintain a temperature of up to 16 degrees. When the flowering period is over, the primrose pots should be moved to a cooler place.
Do not place the plant where it will be exposed to direct sunlight. Or shade the plant in addition to these hours. Domestic primroses need additional moisture. Therefore, periodically spray the plant with a spray bottle with water.
Watering indoor primroses should be carried out as needed. It is important to keep the soil moist and loose all the time. But at the same time, it should not be too wet. Water the flower only with previously settled water. When the plant has finished blooming, the frequency of watering should be reduced.
Primrose in the open field
It is important for a garden primrose to water it correctly, this will ensure good development. It is necessary to water the flower abundantly only in April and until mid-May. Then watering should be reduced. In the summer, during the hot months, it is sufficient to water twice a week. For primrose, it is important that the roots have access to air, so do not allow a dense crust to form in the upper layers of the soil. Loosen the soil regularly or mulch with old peat.
After flowering, thoroughly loosen the soil and allow the plant to rest well. Do not pluck old leaves - they are good protection for the rosette and prevent the flower from degenerating.
Tuck the plant well before winter. If you have little snow in winter, cover the plant with natural materials. Divide the primrose rosette every three years, and repot the flower every five years.
Primrose care
This plant does not need any special conditions of keeping. It will feel good with regular loosening. Be sure to remove weeds and regularly water flower. Peduncles that have already faded must be cut off. This way you can lengthen the flowering period. Several peduncles will be enough to collect seeds.
Primroses love feeding with organic fertilizers. During the flowering period, it is recommended to apply a complex fertilizer. But this should be done if the buds have already set. Otherwise, all nutrients will go to the development of green mass. For planting flower buds, fertilizer must be applied in liquid form after the end of the flowering period.
Breeding primrose
Primrose can multiply in several ways. We have already touched on the reproduction of the plant by dividing the bush. This plant can also be propagated by cuttings. This is very easy to do. It is enough to separate a leaf with a shoot and a bud from the lower tier and root it in the ground from two parts of earth and one part of sand. When 4 new leaves appear, the seedling can be transplanted into open ground.
Another way involves using fresh seeds. For this, the seeds are sown on the prepared soil and sprayed with water. From above, the container with seeds is covered with foil and placed in a cool room until pecking. When sprouts appear, the container is transferred to a warm place and the plant is grown until 2 leaves appear. Then the plants dive and, with the onset of heat, are planted in the ground.
