Is it possible to take painkillers during pregnancy?
Of course, during pregnancy, all medications must be taken with the permission of a doctor. But this is not always possible to do. Therefore, a pregnant woman should stock up on medications that relieve pain. They must be effective and not harm the baby’s health.
Not all situations allow you to take medications to relieve pain. In some cases this is prohibited:
- Do not take pain-relieving medications if a situation has arisen that requires immediate treatment at the hospital.
- You should not use pain relievers if this may distort the symptoms and make it difficult to diagnose the health of the expectant mother.
If a woman feels pain in the lower abdomen, she should immediately go to the hospital. It is especially necessary to do this if, against the background of pain, bloody discharge appears from the genitals. These threatening signs may be harbingers of an incipient miscarriage. Medicines cannot be taken to relieve pain under these circumstances.
It is not recommended to use painkillers for headaches, especially if the middle of pregnancy has already passed. Pain in the head at this time may indicate a serious complication called gestosis. In this situation, blood circulation in small vessels, including in the brain area, is disrupted. This causes an increase in blood pressure, causing swelling, protein is formed in the urine. A woman complains of the appearance of spots before her eyes. Preeclampsia is very dangerous because it can cause detachment placenta.
But pain in the head area may not always occur due to gestosis. The body can signal this about fatigue, colds, or simply a reaction to a change in weather. In such situations, before using an anesthetic drug, it is necessary to measure pressure. If headaches occur frequently, you should definitely consult your doctor.
What painkillers can you take during pregnancy?
Most often, pregnant women choose tablets as painkillers. Doctors recommend using paracetamol in such cases. It relieves pain attacks of low intensity. Additionally, this drug relieves high fever and has an anti-inflammatory effect. Although Paracetamol is able to penetrate the placenta, it does not harm the fetus.
Another medicine that can be used by expectant mothers in case of pain is Analgin. It can be drunk in small dosages and infrequently. Analgin also passes through the placenta into the baby's body, but unlike Paracetamol, it has a negative effect on the condition of the baby. In this regard, it is recommended to use this drug only in exceptional cases.
If the dosage is strictly followed, expectant mothers can take Nurofen. It effectively relieves pain in the initial two trimesters, but by the beginning of the third trimester it is better to abandon it. This medicine can reduce the volume of amniotic fluid.
If pain occurs due to spasms, then it is recommended to use Raibal or No-shpa during pregnancy. These medications are not prohibited for pregnant women, and in some countries their use is even recommended.
The use of pain relief tablets is not always justified. For muscle or joint pain, it is much more convenient to use painkillers in the form of creams or ointments. Pregnant women should know that in their situation, the use of this form of painkillers is possible only on the recommendation of the attending physician. In exceptional situations, the doctor may authorize the use of Traumeel, Diclofenac, Doctor Mom or Fastum-gel ointment.
It is contraindicated for pregnant women to use such common pain-relieving medications as Aspirin, Nise, Ketorol and their derivatives. In any case, you should always consult your doctor before using any pain reliever.
