Delving into history, you can look into the 18th century: it was then that Parisian fashionistas began to throw thin translucent fabrics over their dresses, adding charm and sophistication to their image. And 100 years later, in the 19th century, the bravest girls, taking incredible risks, began to sew themselves dresses with transparent sleeves, which are so relevant in our time.
How to sew a mesh skirt with your own hands - master class
Transparent skirts are indispensable in the office, on a walk, or while traveling, depending on what you mean by transparency. The variety of fabrics in such skirts is huge: from chiffon, organza and lace, to mesh, which we will take on today.
Not all meshes are the same, so before you go to the store, it is better to decide in advance on the choice of exactly the one you need. If you choose a fine mesh, keep in mind that you will need more of it than mesh with large cells. The mesh with shimmer will shimmer beautifully.
We will need:
- mini skirt matching the color of the mesh;
- mesh fabric of the required length;
- sewing machine, scissors.
If you don’t have a suitable skirt, don’t worry, we talked about how to sew one yourself very simply and quickly here. Alternatively, instead of a mini skirt, you can take old short shorts. With the help of the mesh and your hands, they will turn into trendy skirt shorts.
When all the materials are at hand, you can start creating.
- Lay the net on the table and place your old skirt or shorts on top of it.
- Wrap the mesh around the skirt so that the edges of the mesh are on the side seam of the skirt (take into account the seam allowances), leave 15 cm of mesh on top of the skirt, and measure the required amount of length from the hem, depending on what result you want to get in the end: a long transparent skirt for going out, or an office pencil skirt with a mesh top. It’s better not to skimp on fabric here. Trim off the excess.
- Fold and finish the bottom edge of the mesh a little if it is not hemmed.
- Sew the mesh on the side to create a kind of “cover” for your skirt or shorts.
- Put the “cover” on the skirt, don’t forget about the 15 cm on top that we left at the beginning!
- Carefully fold the top 15 cm of the mesh inside the skirt and stitch using a sewing machine.
By the way, the “cover” can be inserted not outside, but inside the skirt, which will add a unique twist to it.
How to sew a mesh skirt for a girl
From the remnants of your mesh you can sew a Tutu skirt (or a tutu skirt, “American”) for my daughter or little sister.
Stock up on a wide elastic band that fits the baby’s waist and patience.
- Deciding on the length of a girl's skirt.
- We cut the mesh into rectangular strips 5-10 cm wide and a length equal to double the length of the future Tutu skirt. The more stripes, the fuller the skirt will be.
- We sew the elastic band and put it on the back of the chair.
Now the fun begins, and the baby can help you with this activity.
- We begin tying the ribbons to the elastic band in even knots, as in the photo.
- If there are a lot of ribbons, you can tie them in several rows.
When all the stripes are finished, all that remains is to drape the elastic with fabric, decorate the skirt or leave it as is.
